Frequently Asked Questions About CBD

CBD is becoming increasingly popular but with so many products, brands and confusing terminology, the world of CBD can be daunting to new users, so we have put together some frequently asked questions about CBD that may help to guide you through it.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a compound extracted from the hemp plant, it is made up from the stalks, stems, leaves and flowers and contains high amounts of active, therapeutic cannabinoids, (chemical compounds found in the plant).

What is THC?

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical responsible for “getting you high” but in the UK the Home Office “only issues licences for cultivation of plants from approved seed types with THC content not exceeding 0.2%”

Why is ethanol the best extraction method?

The purpose of any extraction is to create cannabinoids that are pure and highly concentrated for human consumption and the oil and ethanol method has proved the most effective. It involves introducing the solvent ethanol to the hemp plant in order to extract the cannabinoids which can produce cannabis oil up to 99% purity, creating a higher quality product than by using any other extraction technique and far more efficient than using the CO2 system.

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are a substance found in CBD which gives it the unique aroma of cannabis. They are commonly found in other herbs, fruits and plants and have numerous health benefits leading to the entourage effect.

What is the entourage effect?

The entourage effect refers to the combined effect of cannabinoids and terpenes which together enhance the overall effectiveness of CBD through our endocannabinoid system.

Essentially CBD is thought to help your body achieve better balance.

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The body is responsible for producing human cannabinoids which is a messaging system that is known as “the endocannabinoid system” it is responsible for regulating biological functions such as pain, sleep, mood etc its aim is to ensure these biological functions work in harmony.

Is CBD safe?

The World Health Organisation claims CBD oil is “generally well tolerated with a good safety profile”

As with any supplement there may be minor side effects, but these are generally uncommon, and you should speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.

CBD is non-addictive, has no withdrawal symptoms and is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile, however, the FSA advise pregnant women and those breastfeeding not to take CBD.

How much shall I take?

The optimum dose of CBD will be different from person to person.

Your own body will be the indicator of what is ideal for you.

For new users we recommend taking 10-15mg per day for a week to see how your body reacts to the CBD and then adjust the dosage (higher or lower) at 5-7 day intervals until you feel you are getting the full benefit of the product.

It is important that when your optimum dose is achieved that you do not continue to increase the amount as this may have a negative effect and destroy the benefits.

What if I feel no effect?

The effects of CBD can be subtle, and you may feel as though you are not experiencing the full effect, this could be due to a number of factors such as;

  • Incorrect dosage – recommend starting on a lower dose and increasing gradually (as above)
  • Time - you may need to give it several weeks or months before you see a difference
  • CBD product type – a different form of CBD may be more suitable i.e chocolates or oils
  • Body weight - as a high level of body fat can interfere with how well CBD is absorbed into the blood stream
  • CBD products – ensure they are from a reputable source that contains the correct level of high-quality CBD
