How Can CBD help with Anxiety?

COVID19 has caused many of us to become anxious, which has been further exacerbated by the daily media onslaught detailing the progress of the pandemic. However, CBD may be a positive way of calming the anxiety we feel from the pressures brought on by self isolation, loss of income and disruption to work and personal life.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a compound extracted from the hemp plant, it is made up from the stalks, stems, leaves and flowers and contains high amounts of active, therapeutic cannabinoids, (chemical compounds found in the plant).

How can CBD help with anxiety?

Similar to some anti-anxiety drugs, CBD is understood to activate a type of serotonin (the chemical believed to be linked to happiness and wellbeing) receptor in the brain, which is why one of its best-known benefits is as a mood enhancer and a heightening sense of wellbeing. CBD research is still very much in its infancy though but there is continuing evidence to indicate that it can provide some people with relief from anxiety.

Case studies

A 2015 analysis of earlier studies concluded that there is preclinical evidence to support the potential of CBD as a treatment for anxiety and related illnesses. The research strongly pointed to cannabidiol playing an important role in treating short term anxiety but the long term effects and its use of a prolonged treatment are still to be tested.

In 2016 a case study explored the possibility of using cannabidiol to reduce the symptoms of PTSD and a sleep disorder provoked by anxiety in a child with a history of trauma. Researchers found that CBD did in fact help to reduce the anxiety of the child and helped her to sleep better.

How to take CBD for anxiety

In these troubling times there are many ways in which CBD can be used to not only soothe our anxieties but also allow us to take time to indulge ourselves. Why not start the day with a cup of CBD infused raspberry tea or treat yourself to a hot chocolate with a few added drops of CBD. While self isolating many people have turned to baking to help chase away those negative thoughts and there are many recipes available that include the use of CBD oil. Still not convinced? Then why not try a CBD cocktail or a pre-dinner G&T infused with CBD. Sweet dreams everyone!

Always consult your doctor before taking CBD particularly if you have been taking any other medication.
