Could CBD Become An Alternative Way To Treat Pain And Inflammation?
Pain and inflammation are the body's natural defence against injury and infection, and unfortunately, both can have a big impact on quality of life. Our bodies contain a messaging system known as "the endocannabinoid system" which is used to regulate biological functions such as eating, sleeping, pain and immune system. One of the most popular uses of CBD is for its possible, natural pain relief and anti inflammatory properties.
There has been a growing dissatisfaction with traditional drugs and their, sometimes, debilitating side effects, so could CBD become an alternative way to treat pain and inflammation? CBD is becoming a major area of research but the research has mainly been based on animal models, some of which are mentioned here.
Studies undertaken
A 2015 review, which was published in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, considered the anti inflammatory properties of CBD. The review established that CBD had the potential to be a helpful treatment for a range of conditions identified as inflammation.
In 2016 a further study, from the European Journal of Pain, concluded, again using animal models, that the "data indicate that topical CBD applications has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain related behaviours and inflammation without evidence of side-effects."
A further review was conducted in 2018 to explore the most recent developments for the delivery of CBD as a treatment for pain and inflammation. It stated that each year, more than a 1000 articles are being published, and this trend is set to continue and they expect that recent developments in this area will result in new therapeutic strategies using known cannabinoids and cannabinoid synthetic derivatives.
There is an increasing body of evidence and a plethora of anecdotal stories that suggest that CBD is potentially effective for the treatment of pain and inflammation. However it must be stressed that there still needs to be rigorous clinical studies on humans and that the quality of the CBD and dosage required are important factors.
Always consult your doctor before taking CBD particularly if you have been taking any other medication.
