1. Did you know?

It has been said that Queen Victoria, who was considered the very symbol of prudishness and known in her later years as "the Grandmother of Europe" took cannabis to relieve the pain she suffered from menstrual cramps. Her private doctor, Sir J Russell Reynolds, wrote of cannabis in an article published in 1890 that "when pure and administered carefully, is one of the most valuable medicines we possess". Of course we can't be entirely sure that Victoria did take it, but if Her Majesty did, we hope it brought her blessed relief.

3. CBD Oil and Hemp Oil are not the same thing!

Despite the fact that CBD oil and Hemp oil are produced from the same hemp plant they have a different makeup and have different benefits for the body. Hemp is made from the seeds of the plant and is well known for its many nutritional benefits and is common in many skin and beauty products but it does not contain CBD. However, CBD oil is made from the flowers, stalks, leaves and buds of the plant and retains all the natural cannabis terpenes and cannabinoids,(but not THC, the element that can make you high), that work with the body's endocannabinoid system. Hemp oil does not, therefore offer the same therapeutic effects as CBD oil which may help individuals with pain relief, anxiety and insomnia.

4. How long has hemp been grown and used by man?

Hemp is known to be one of the earliest plants cultivated by man and the first use of it was found in ancient China at around 8000 BC. The plant was grown for its fibres and was used to create ropes, textiles and papers and in fact textiles and paper made from hemp were found in the tomb of the Emperor Wu of the Han dynasty, (141 - 87 BC).

5. Cannabis used in surgery ???

The Ancient Chinese believed that surgery should be administered as a last resort and little time was spent teaching or describing surgical procedures. However, around the beginning of the 3rd century, Hua Tuo, who is considered the founder of Chinese surgery, used cannabis mixed with wine to anesthetise patients and make them insensitive to pain during surgery. Umm.........

6. Hemp and food

The Nepalese, living in rural areas have used locally produced cooking oil made from home grown hemp seeds for many generations and some remote and isolated areas still only use this vegetable oil in cooking. In present day China roasted or raw hemp seeds are still used as a popular snack food.

7. The Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church

The Ethiopian Coptic Church is an off shoot of the Rastafari movement that flourished in Jamaica during the 1970's and they use cannabis as the sacrament. A pamphlet published in 1988 by the Church quotes the following "Herb(marijuana) is a Godly creation from the beginning of the world" and it goes on to say, "Its purpose in creation is a fiery sacrifice to be offered to our Redeemer during obligations".

8. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and CBD

A report published by WHO in 2017 said that CBD has "been demonstrated as an effective treatment for epilepsy". It also states that there is preliminary evidence that it could be effective for serious illnesses such as Parkinson's disease, and for relief of pain, anxiety and depression.

9. Hemp and the Arts

Alice in Wonderland was originally printed on hemp paper, and incidentally, so were the first drafts of the Declaration of Independence. The Mona Lisa is said to have been painted on hemp linen, and artists such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt also used canvases made from hemp.

10. Hemp and the textile industry.

In America 80% of all textiles, fabrics, clothes, and bed linen were made from hemp until the 1820s. Today there are companies that are taking a friendly and greener approach to the environment by producing clothes made from hemp. Even the US brand Levi's have begun the manufacture of jeans made from 30% hemp and 70% cotton, the process will use minimal chemicals, minimal energy and much less water. Let's hope others follow suit.
